New York Theatre Ballet

MISSION | New York Theatre Ballet provides an intimate environment for the performance, study, and appreciation of classical and contemporary dance, with a commitment to cultural enrichment and enjoyment for all.

OVERVIEW | New York Theatre Ballet was founded in 1978 by its artistic director, Diana Byer. It is the most widely seen chamber ballet company in the United States. "New York Theatre ballet confirms its status as an invaluable company," says Alastair Macaulay of the New York Times. (April 2010) NYTB has earned national acclaim for its restoration and revival of small masterworks by great choreographers and for its innovative hour-long ballets based on children's literature.

NYTB tours its family and adult programs both nationally and abroad. Its audiences know the Company for its theatrical expressiveness, high production quality, and intimate accessibility to every audience member.

HISTORY | For more than 30 years, NYTB has produced, for adult and family audiences, dozens of classic masterpieces and contemporary ballets. Its roster includes dances by Frederick Ashton, George Balanchine, Merce Cunningham, Agnes de Mille, José Limón and Antony Tudor. In April 2010, NYTB appeared with The New York Pops at Carnegie Hall to a sold out house. NYTB has been invited to perform at dance venues such as Jacob's Pillow, Kaatsbaan, and New York's City Center.

SIGNATURES | The Signatures Series presents classic revivals by many of the greatest choreographers in dance history including Frederick Ashton, Merce Cunningham, Agnes de Mille, Jose Limon and Antony Tudor. The Signatures Series has received major funding from NEFA for Dance/Speak: The Life of Agnes de Mille and funding from the NEA for Merce Cunningham's Septet, both for NYTB's touring initiatives. NYTB also presents new choreography suitable to its distinctive role as a national chamber ballet company, fostering new choreography by emerging choreographers.

The performance of Septet has been made possible in part by the National Endowment for the Arts as part of the American Masterpieces: Three Centuries of Artistic Genius.
